The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) recently announced the formation of the Offshore Wind Development Coalition (OffshoreWindDC). This coalition will focus on advocacy and education efforts to promote offshore wind energy in the United States.
Next to AWEA the alliance consists of private offshore wind developers. Jim Lanard, President of OffshoreWindDC and formerly Managing Director of the developer Deepwater Wind, says: ”We are delighted to join with AWEA to advocate for policies that will support the development of this well-established technology.”
AWEA CEO Denise Bode emphasizes: “The creation of this coalition demonstrates the growing interest in offshore wind energy in the U.S.”. So far, offshore wind projects totaling more than 5,000 megawatts (MW) have been proposed and are in the planning or development stages in the U.S. The Department of Energy estimates that 50,000 MW can be generated with offshore wind energy by 2030.
